Eddy Current Testing (ECT)

Surface Eddy Current Inspection is an electromagnetic inspection technique developed for fast scanning to locate cracks in welds and surface materials covered by paint, coating and marine growth. The technology relies on eddy currents flowing in a component will be disturbed by the presence of a crack. Complies with BS EN 1711 (2000)

ADVANTAGES OF

LIMITATIONS OF

ECT

  • Can only be applied on conductive materials
  • Higher skill and training level required than with other techniques
  • Surface finish and roughness can cause false indications
  • Reference standards required for setup of the system
  • Limited depth penetration
  • Discontinuities that lie parallel to the probe coil winding and probe scan direction are undetectable
