Eddy Current Testing (ECT)

Surface Eddy Current Inspection is an electromagnetic inspection technique developed for fast scanning to locate cracks in welds and surface materials covered by paint, coating and marine growth. The technology relies on eddy currents flowing in a component will be disturbed by the presence of a crack. Complies with BS EN 1711 (2000)

ADVANTAGES OF

ECT

  • Can be used for base material or welds on ferritic or non-ferritic metals
  • Corrosion Detection, Conductivity and Coating Measurement
  • Can be used on hot surfaces, splash zone and subsea environments
  • Provides both depth and length information
  • Able to detect surface breaking fatigue cracks through 2mm of coating
  • Minimal surface preparation and can be applied over paint and other coatings
  • Detection and sizing of fatigue cracks
  • Inspection of welds in offshore platforms and rigs
  • Detection of cracks and corrosion in vessels and piping in oil and gas and petrochemical
  • Suitable with Rope Access Method – No Scaffolding Required

LIMITATIONS OF

ECT

  • Can only be applied on conductive materials
  • Higher skill and training level required than with other techniques
  • Surface finish and roughness can cause false indications
  • Reference standards required for setup of the system
  • Limited depth penetration
  • Discontinuities that lie parallel to the probe coil winding and probe scan direction are undetectable
